LIFTING
Powerlifting is a sport that originated in the 1950s in the United States, evolving from odd lifts. It was first introduced in Greece during the 1970s by Giorgos Tromaras and has been experiencing growth since 2014.
Powerlifting is open to men and women of all ages. It consists of three competitive lifts: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift, with each lift contributing approximately 36%, 24%, and 40% to the total score, respectively. It is the only sport where the primary determinant of victory is maximal muscular strength.
Athletes are allowed three attempts at each lift, aiming to achieve their maximum strength with one repetition while adhering to the specific rules set by the corresponding international federation. Their lifts are judged by three referees positioned to the left, right, and front of the lifting platform. For a lift to be deemed valid or invalid, at least two of the three referees must agree.
According to the International Powerlifting League, the sport is divided into categories based on age [Teenage (up to 19), Junior (20-23), Open (24-39), Master (40+)] and body weight (Men: 52, 56, 60, 67.5, 75, 82.5, 90, 100, 110, 125, 140, 140+ kg – Women: 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 67.5, 75, 82.5, 90, 100, 100+ kg).
